African Migrants In Russia Joined Others To Stage Their Own Version Of The World Cup

Almost one in every 10 footballers at the World Cup is a migrant. It might sound like a fun fact but it’s not fun when you consider how much discrimination happens in professional football. To shed light on the challenges faced by refugees, African migrants living in Russia joined others from Asia and the Middle East to stage their own version of the World Cup.

Reuters reports that the players were brought together by Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) and the Civic Assistance Committee, which helps migrants and refugees.

In addition to racial discrimination, it’s quite difficult for asylum-seekers to obtain refugee status in Russia. So, the football games were the players’ way of letting the authorities know they exist and appealing to be given an opportunity in the country.

According to a report by TIME, several women working for international media outlets have been harassed and assaulted while doing their jobs at the World Cup. To help fight sexism in football, women were also involved in the tournament.
